"Laowai" in Mandarin Chinese means a foreigner. When I first arrived in Suzhou (close to Shanghai) around 18 years ago I heard this word a lot - in fact every time I went out on the streets people would point and say "Laowai" !
Times change, cities develop, and attitudes change. It's not exciting anymore to see foreigners on the street, in fact in Suzhou there are probably too many, and it's often only the young children who whisper "laowai" to their parents.
I have been in China a long time, have a family born here (at least some of them) and brought up in China, I work in China, own property in China, even drive a car in China but .... I am still a laowai (reluctantly) !!
Site introductions are boring. I wanted somewhere to display the photographs I enjoy taking and processing. It may be heresy, but photography for me is more about the technology of modern cameras and the joy of spending (just a little) time processing and developing pictures in Lightroom than it is about an artistic "end".
Having said that I am fortunate enough to live in a part of the world which offers almost endless opportunities for "street" and "travel" photography. There are examples of both on these pages along with a wide variety of every thing else.
I don't profess to be a great photographer - as one of my friends (met on a photo tour in Laos during 2015) told me recently "you are weird, have an interesting eye, I like your style" !! A perfect compliment (thank you Thierry !!) . I enjoy the process and if you've read this introduction hope you will take a few minutes to browse the site and find something that catches your attention.
